We're empowering Maasai widows with Goats, Grants, and Business Skills Trainings.
Goats & Grants
Since 2022, we’ve selected a new group of women each year to participate in our Hope for Widows Program. These women are heads of household who are solely responsible for supporting their families. We provide them with comprehensive trainings in confidence building, leadership, business skills, marketing, and other entrepreneurial strategies. After these trainings, we hold our Goats & Grants Ceremony where each participant receives a $150 grant as well as three goats.
To support the fourth year of our transformational Hope for Widows Program, we're raising $5,400 to support 15 of the 30 widows who will participate in next summer's trainings. Our goal is to secure enough funds to purchase 45 goats and sponsor 15 grants by midnight on Giving Tuesday. In dong so, we'll be well on our way to another year of Helping Women Bloom in Kenya.
The goats (two females and one male) are long-term investments that help widows build capital which compounds over time. The grants are short-term cash infusions to help jumpstart the widows’ small business ventures with stock or raw materials needed for production.
The Hope for Widows Program
The Hope for Widows pilot program began in the summer of 2022. It follows the same teaching pedagogy as our Livestock as a Business (LAB) program but differs in that it works with individuals. Training sessions involve elements of group education, but the goal is to teach individuals real-life skills that help their small business ventures.
Widows from the pilot graduated in a special ceremony on August 6, 2024. They worked together to plan the ceremony, which 800-900 people attended. They've also become examples to other Maasai women by pooling the money they've earned to uplift others who are struggling. We expect future graduates of the program to follow in their footsteps.
